NETWORK OF INDEPENDENT JOURNALISTS FOR CENTRAL AND EASTERN
of Independent Journalists (NIJ) was founded by Institute
for Development of Democracy in Eastern Europe (IDEE, Wsshington)
in 1993 with the goal of improving and supporting better
cooperation among independent media and journalists in the
region in analysis of transition events and processes in
Central and Eastern Europe and countries of the former Soviet
Union. Second goal was to develop media channels which can
offer better and more credible reporting about the problems
of those countries.
a way, NIJ became a kind of forum for comparison of transition
experience of the countries in region, showing their weaknesses,
but also their democratic improvements.
NIJ has been coordinated by STINA with IDEE support.
NIJ is a weekly news service which published in-depth analyses
and covers current events in the region.
As a weekly
news service, NIJ published over 280 issues with more than
1000 articles. Over 50 journalists from 30 countries of
Central and Eastern Europe as well as former Soviet Union
participated in NIJ project. Today, NIJ news service is
used by more than 250 media outlets, NGOs, international
organizations, research institutions and scholars from 40
NIJ is still
sponsored by IDEE. NIJ archive is available at IDEE web
