NETWORK OF INDEPENDENT JOURNALISTS FOR CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE

Network of Independent Journalists (NIJ) was founded by Institute for Development of Democracy in Eastern Europe (IDEE, Wsshington) in 1993 with the goal of improving and supporting better cooperation among independent media and journalists in the region in analysis of transition events and processes in Central and Eastern Europe and countries of the former Soviet Union. Second goal was to develop media channels which can offer better and more credible reporting about the problems of those countries.
In such a way, NIJ became a kind of forum for comparison of transition experience of the countries in region, showing their weaknesses, but also their democratic improvements.
Since 1994 NIJ has been coordinated by STINA with IDEE support.
Since 1997 NIJ is a weekly news service which published in-depth analyses and covers current events in the region.
As a weekly news service, NIJ published over 280 issues with more than 1000 articles. Over 50 journalists from 30 countries of Central and Eastern Europe as well as former Soviet Union participated in NIJ project. Today, NIJ news service is used by more than 250 media outlets, NGOs, international organizations, research institutions and scholars from 40 countries.
NIJ is still sponsored by IDEE. NIJ archive is available at IDEE web site at www.idee.org.
